Vail, Colorado in December: Our Magical Winter Getaway & Travel Tips

Vail Colorado in December is the perfect destination for a magical winter getaway, especially if you love snow-covered mountains, charming villages, and festive holiday decorations.

In December 2021, my youngest daughter and I spent three nights in Vail, and it was one of those trips that truly put us in the Christmas spirit. We stayed at the beautiful Tivoli Lodge, explored Vail Village, went horseback riding, enjoyed ice skating and snowboarding, and experienced an unforgettable sleigh ride dinner at Bearcat Stables.

While I absolutely loved our trip, there are a few things I would do differently, especially when it comes to driving from Denver during the winter.

Getting to Vail: Flying Into Denver vs. Eagle Airport

We flew from Jacksonville, Florida, into Denver International Airport and rented a car to drive to Vail.

While Denver offers plenty of flight options, I learned that driving through the Colorado mountains in December isn’t something I would necessarily recommend for a woman traveling alone, especially if you’re not comfortable driving in snowy mountain conditions.

Although my daughter was with me, the winter driving conditions were still something I had to consider.

We originally planned to fly home from Denver, but I ended up purchasing new flights departing from Eagle County Regional Airport, closer to Vail.

And I’m so glad I did!

Interstate 70 was experiencing significant snow-related problems, and flights out of Denver were being canceled. Changing our departure airport ended up being a great decision.

My travel tip: If you’re planning a winter trip to Vail, compare flights into Denver with flights through Eagle County Regional Airport. The convenience of flying closer to Vail may be worth the additional cost, especially if you’re traveling alone or aren’t comfortable with mountain driving.

Where We Stayed: Tivoli Lodge in Vail Village

We stayed at Tivoli Lodge from December 12–15, 2021, and I couldn’t have been happier with our choice.

The lodge was beautiful, comfortable, and in the perfect location for exploring Vail.

One of the things I loved most was that we could walk everywhere. Restaurants, shopping, skiing, and the charming village atmosphere were all easily accessible from the hotel.

We really only needed our rental car when we ventured outside the village for our horseback riding and sleigh ride experiences.

Being able to leave the car parked and explore Vail on foot made our stay so much more enjoyable.

If you’re planning a trip to Vail, especially during the winter, I would absolutely recommend considering Tivoli Lodge.

Best Things to Do in Vail Colorado in December

Bearcat Stables: A Magical Sleigh Ride Dinner

If there’s one experience I would tell anyone visiting Vail during the holidays not to miss, it’s the dinner and sleigh ride at Bearcat Stables.

This was hands down my favorite part of our entire trip.

There’s something incredibly special about riding through the Colorado winter scenery during the holiday season. With the snow, festive atmosphere, and beautiful surroundings, the entire evening felt magical.

After our sleigh ride, we enjoyed dinner inside a small, cozy cabin. We also spent time outside by the fire making s’mores.

It was such a wonderful combination of outdoor adventure, holiday charm, and a cozy winter dinner.

Of all the things we did in Vail, this is the experience that really put me in the holiday spirit.

If you’re visiting Vail in December, I would highly recommend looking into this experience.

Horseback Riding at 4 Eagle Ranch

Another activity we really enjoyed was horseback riding at 4 Eagle Ranch.

Our ride took us through beautiful open fields and up and down a small mountain. It was a wonderful way to experience Colorado’s scenery from a different perspective.

I love incorporating unique experiences into my travels, and horseback riding in the mountains was definitely one of the highlights of this trip.

Ice Skating in Vail Village

We also made time for ice skating during our stay.

There’s something especially fun about ice skating in a mountain village surrounded by winter scenery and holiday decorations.

It was another great way to enjoy the festive atmosphere without spending the entire day skiing.

Snowboarding in Vail

My daughter decided to try snowboarding during our trip.

She started with a brief lesson to learn the basics and then headed out on her own to practice.

She absolutely loved it!

Vail is known for its skiing and snowboarding, so if you’re traveling with someone who wants to spend time on the slopes, it’s a wonderful destination to combine mountain activities with a relaxing winter getaway.

Dining in Vail: What to Expect

I’ll be honest: we didn’t have one particular restaurant that stood out as a favorite.

Most of the places we visited offered casual, bar-style food. Everything was decent, but the restaurants weren’t necessarily the highlight of our trip.

What I enjoyed more was the overall atmosphere of Vail Village, especially during the holidays.

That said, dining in the heart of a ski resort can be expensive, so I would recommend budgeting a little extra for meals.

Is Vail Expensive?

Yes! Vail is definitely a destination where expenses can add up quickly.

Because we stayed right in the heart of the ski village, we were surrounded by restaurants, shopping, and activities geared toward winter resort visitors.

Between lodging, dining, and winter activities, it’s worth planning your budget ahead of time.

For me, the beautiful location, convenience, and memorable experiences made the trip worthwhile.

Is Vail Colorado in December Worth Visiting?

I think Vail can be a wonderful destination for solo female travelers, especially women who enjoy mountain scenery, winter activities, shopping, and exploring charming villages.

One of the biggest advantages of staying somewhere like Tivoli Lodge is the walkability. Once you’re in the village, you can enjoy so much without needing to drive.

My biggest caution would be transportation during the winter months.

If I were traveling alone, I would consider flying into Eagle County Regional Airport or arranging transportation rather than driving from Denver in potentially difficult winter conditions.

Of course, winter weather can affect either airport, so it’s always important to monitor conditions and allow flexibility in your travel plans.

Final Thoughts: Would I Visit Vail Again?

Absolutely!

Our December trip to Vail was such a special mother-daughter getaway.

I loved the beautiful mountain scenery, the holiday decorations, and the convenience of staying right in the village.

But if I had to choose one favorite memory, it would definitely be our sleigh ride dinner at Bearcat Stables.

Between the winter scenery, cozy cabin dinner, and making s’mores by the fire, it was the kind of experience that really captures the magic of the holiday season.

If I planned another winter trip to Vail, I would probably reconsider flying into Denver and driving through the mountains.

Otherwise, I wouldn’t change much about our getaway.

If you’re looking for a festive winter destination with beautiful scenery, memorable activities, and plenty of holiday charm, Vail is definitely worth considering.
